Plotting the Garden

Elizabeth Ross, University of Florida

Elizabeth Ross is Associate Professor of Art History in the School of Art + Art History at the University of Florida, currently serving as head of the art history program. Her first book, Picturing Experience in the Early Printed Book : Breydenbach’s Peregrinatio from Venice to Jerusalem, published by Penn State University Press in 2014, explores the text and images of a seminal work of early printing, the 1486 Peregrinatio in terram sanctam. The author-publisher and his artist-collaborator engaged the potential of the new medium to give an account of the cross-cultural experience of their Holy Land pilgrimage, to advocate for crusade, and to rethink the form of a book. While she continues to work on pilgrims and their libraries, her current book project looks at the visual imagination of gardens and interior spaces imagined as gardens in France during the long fifteenth century.  Abstract
